Tremor Rattles Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth Jamaica Today: Earthquake Discovery

KINGSTON — An earthquake of uncertain magnitude was felt in sections of Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica this morning, authorities said.

Earthquake Discovery reported this afternoon that a minor earthquake was felt in sections of southwest Jamaica at approximately 10:05 a.m. today.

The earthquake’s epicenter occurred at a depth of 6,2 miles underground at latitude:18.09364° north and longitude: 77.82715° west.

“Since no national or international seismological agency has reported this quake, its status remains unconfirmed.” Earthquake Discovery said.

Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth is a minor market village connecting Black River to Mandeville that was known for bauxite mining in the 1950’s.

The affected town is near the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience, a popular stop in Jamaican tourism.

During 2020, Jamaica was shaken by 2 quakes of magnitude 4.0 or above, 2 quakes between 3.0 and 4.0, and 1 quake of magnitude 2.9.
