HAVING RECORDED their first win in this season’s Inter-Secondary Schools’ Sports Association (ISSA)/Manning Cup competition, Calabar High School’s head coach, David Laylor, said they are feeling a lot more relieved and relaxed and they are hoping to push on for greater things in the tournament this season.

Calabar High, who are one of the favourites to win the title, outclassed Bridgeport High 5-0 in their second match of the tournament at the Stadium East playing field yesterday.

They were led to victory courtesy of a first half hat-trick from striker Darren Chinnon, who scored in the 16th, 19th and 30th minutes of the game.

Omario Henry (10th) and Rushilee Kelson (11th) were the other scores for the Red Hills Road-based institution.

Laylor said he was very pleased with his team’s first victory.

“It is always good to get a first win in any competition,” said Laylor.

“This win will set the tone for us because it is a good win and I am very happy for that as it will give the team a lot more confidence going forward into the competition.

“This was a must-win game for us because we have to make sure that we stay in line with everybody else in the group,” Laylor said.

However, the Calabar coach said that he was not pleased with his team’s second half performance, because they failed to capitalise on a number of clear scoring chances.

“I am a little disappointed with our second-half performance because I think that the guys got a little complacent and carried away, hence we had no goals in the second half,” said Laylor.

Fabian Taylor, head coach of Bridgeport High blamed his team’s heavy defeat on the lack of experience on his players path.

“It is a better second half for us because we played well and we kept them off the scoresheet,” said Taylor.

“But this is a very inexperienced team as there is only one player in this group that has ever played in the Manning Cup before,” he said.

“Most of these players have never played in any competition before and so it is work in progress for us and I think we can only get better from here,” Taylor said.

Meanwhile, Kingston Technical High School (KTHS) recorded a surprise 1-0 victory over defending champions Jamaica College. Jahiem Bryan netted the lone goal for KTHS in 61st minute.

In other games, 10-man Charlie Smith Comprehensive High defeated Kingston High 2-0. Demar Brown netted both goals for Charlie Smith in the ninth and 60th minutes.
