St Catherine High School will try to secure the final automatic second-round spot in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup football competition when they face Group C leaders Kingston College (KC) at the Spanish Town Prison Oval today at 3 p.m.
St Catherine are looking to follow Jamaica College and Kingston Technical High School from Group A, Camperdown High School and Tivoli Gardens High School from Group B, and Kingston College (KC), as automatic qualifiers.
However, they are tied on 10 points with Mona High School, who have completed their fixtures but hold a goal difference of +7.
St Catherine head coach Anthony Patrick says losing is not an option, and he believes they are prepared to get the result they want from the match.
“This is a one-way result for us,” he said. “We have to get something from the game and we are going in with the frame of mind to have a good game and get a good result from it.
“Both teams are unbeaten. So it is going to be a tough one tactically and technically, but we are prepared and the players are ready for the challenge and to put their best foot forward.”
He added that, despite KC having already qualified, he expects that they will want to win the group and will play with the intention to do so.
“KC wants to win the zone, so they will have to play,” he said. “We just want a point from it and we are prepared. It will not be an easy one, but we are prepared and I think it will be enough to get something from the game.”
But KC’s defence has not been breached in four matches and they have netted 17 goals in the process.
St Catherine’s defence is as impressive as KC’s, with just one goal conceded in their four matches.
However, their attacking prowess is far less, with only six goals officially registered in the competition so far. They had a 26-0 win over St Mary’s College, but that result was ruled null and void, with St Mary’s pulling out of the competition.
Along with KC, St Catherine are the only unbeaten teams remaining in the group, and, if they are able to maintain that record, it will be enough to see them through to the next phase.
