SHE’S MY DESTINY’s hat-trick bid hit a brick wall at five furlongs straight on February 12 – GO DEH GIRL’s splits of 22.2, 33.3 and 45.2 – not the 34.3, 46.3 and 58.3 she had used to cripple rivals in back-to-back middle-distance races, appearing every bit the super horse, before her Achilles heel was exposed.
Well, she’s back.
The Ash Wednesday Trophy at six and a half furlongs, against horses who won’t know what hit them when SHE’S MY DESTINY leaves the half-mile marker, has moved the goalpost back to where Jason DaCosta’s filly wants it – a pace she can dominate with nobody to eyeball her as GO DEH GIRL did.
Punters hunting Pick-9 bankers on mandatory payout day can safely put SHE’S MY DESTINY in the win column along with her two stablemates – DEN STREET and imported debutante, UNRULY GYAL – all partnered by Anthony Thomas.
Defending champion jockey Thomas, who landed a two-timer on Saturday, is still eight wins off Dane Dawkins in the early standings but has the biggest barn in the Caribbean at his disposal, which should easily land him a fourth title.
Robert Halledeen, six off Dawkins, appears to be a fixture at champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ barn but shares duties with Tom, Dick and Harry, leaving Thomas with a rose-laden path to the title.
With SHE’S MY DESTINY out of the way, DEN STREET, whose light faded after placing third behind FURTHER AND BEYOND and SHE’S A WONDER in the Jamaica Two-Year-old Stakes two years ago, should use his class to run over non-winners-of-four in the fourth race at five furlongs round.
After a dismal performance behind SOLID APPROACH to start his three-year-old campaign last year January, DEN STREET spent the rest of the season playing second fiddle to his stablemate in DaCosta’s championship bid.
However, as the season progressed, he appeared to be getting back his groove, finishing fourth behind Nunes’ CURLIN’S AFFAIR at six and a half furlongs on December 26. Reporting at 110lb, down nine pounds from his Boxing Day excursion, DEN STREET is expected to come alive against the fillies MAGICAL MOOD and SWEET MAJESTY.
UNRULY GYAL, a US$12,000 buy in Ocala last June by DaCosta, debuts at five furlongs straight, taking on five local-breds and hapless-looking stablemate, LION OF EKATI, who is also a United States-bred.
Sired by former Bob Baffert runner, Drill, a middle-distance specialist, UNRULY GYAL gets the track bias, widest at post seven, which should serve her well should she have any hiccups at the start on debut. What has she been doing at exercise? She clocked 1:00.3 from the gate twice and an easy 1:02.4, alongside DEN STREET, last Saturday morning.
