DEJAE’S BOY stepped up in class from a third-place finish, as a $1 million claimer, to notch a stinging 19-1 upset in yesterday’s Ash Wednesday Trophy for overnight-allowance runners, taking up the running a half-mile out from 1-2 favourite SHE’S MY DESTINY, who, for the second consecutive race, appeared a shadow of the horse who clocked eye-popping times in previous events.
Running first time out, off a January 29 claim, for trainer O’neil Markland, DEJAE’S BOY attacked Jason DaCosta’s SHE’S MY DESTINY a half-mile out in the six-and-a-half-furlong event and led into the lane before racing clear of United States-bred I’VE GOT MAGIC, who had improved into second off the turn.
I’VE GOT MAGIC, a winner last time out at five and a half furlongs, was no match for DEJAE’S BOY, who pulled away to win by five and a quarter lengths in 1:19.3.
MONEY MONSTER finished third ahead of SHE’S MY DESTINY, who had done little on the exercise track since flopping at five furlongs straight on February 12, beaten into fourth place by GO DEH GIRL and RACE CAR, who was reporting off a lengthy lay-up.
DEJAE’S BOY handed leading jockey Dane Dawkins his second winner on the 10-race holiday card, moving him to 20 wins atop the riders’ standings.
Dawkins, who win the second event for maiden three-year-olds astride 8-5 chance BLUE VINYL for Patrick Lynch, is eight clear of three riders – Robert Halledeen, Tevin Foster, and Dane Nelson, who booted home a three-timer.
Nelson, a three-time champion, won back-to-back races with UNCLE VINNIE and ACERO before closing his three-timer aboard POWER RANKING for Richard Azan, upstaging DaCosta’s imported debutante, 2-5 favourite UNRULY GYAL, who disputed the lead with PHOENIX RISEN before weakening into third a furlong out.
