Humble Lion captain out with fractured foot | Sports

HUMBLE LION captain, Andrew Vanzie, will be out for at least six weeks after suffering a fractured metatarsal in the Clarendon derby against Vere United in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence on Sunday.
Vanzie had to be substituted after just five minutes when he made a sliding tackle on Vere’s Tavis Grant and came off worse.
According to coach Andrew Price, the replacement for not just the captain, but also the team’s leading goalscorer won’t be easy.
“He has a fracture of the metatarsal bone in his left foot. It is the small bone and he will probably be fitted in a protective boot. But he will be out for at least six weeks minimum,” he told The Gleaner.
“The captain has been monumental for the team. He has been playing well all season and it is just unfortunate that he got that injury.
“He’s a good player. He leads the team well and we just hope to get him back as soon as possible,” he added.
Price went on to say that replacing Vanzie, while difficult, will force others to step into the role of being the team’s leaders.
“We are looking for players to step up and fill the void because his absence will be very immense. We need people to come in and step up at this point in time,” said Price.
Meanwhile, after keeping their opponents off the scoresheet in their last two games, a big turnaround from the concession of 12 in the first six matches, Price is pleased.
Humble Lion sit 10th in the standings on six points after six draws from eight matches, but Price believes that if they can now get it right in the attacking third, the team will not only claim their first win of the season, but will start moving up the table as well.
“We have been working on that (defence) because we have been conceding a lot of goals since the start of the season and for two consecutive games, we have got clean sheets. We just need to get it right at the other end and start scoring some goals because that is where we are not doing well, in front of goal,” he said.
“But we are headed in the right direction. We have not been doing well defensively and we wanted to fix that. We just need to work on our finishing and I am sure that we will get the three points soon.
“The (league) leaders have lost as much games as we have lost. What we need is to start turning those one points into three and we could really move up the table.
“But we are heading in the right direction and it is just to get that first win,” said Price.
