Arnett Gardens stretched their unbeaten run in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) to eight matches yesterday after Kimani Arbouine’s goal 12 minutes from time earned the south St Andrew-based club a 1-1 draw with former leaders Mount Pleasant at Sabina Park.
Mount Pleasant ended the game with 10 players after Jowell Powell was red-carded in the 83rd minute.
Arbouine, a former Cavalier player, who had netted only two goals in his previous six seasons in the league, surpassed that tally with his third of the season. At the end of the game he hailed his team’s fightback
“It is a wonderful feeling getting the equalising goal. We came out and did what the coach asked us to do, and it is unfortunate that we didn’t get the win, but we kept pushing because we have the mentality of a lion and we never give up,” he stated. Earlier, Alwayne Harvey fired Mount Pleasant into a third-minute lead when he curved a precise shot into the top corner of Eric Edwards’ near post.
Arnett had numerous half-chances throughout the contest but could not capitalise. However, after conceding, the ‘Junglists’ took the game to their opponents and were rewarded in the 78th minute when Arbouine capitalised on a loose ball in the box to fire home from 12 yards.
Mount Pleasant had ended the first half the stronger of the two teams, and Ricardo Morris had three great chances but could not capitalise. Daniel Greene also had a low shot parried wide.
Arnett improved in the second half, but clear-cut chances were not forthcoming.
Arbouine had a great chance when he turned Ladale Richie and was through on goal, but he stumbled on the ball and lost possession.
However, moments later, the forward equalised when Romeo Guthrie’s shot was blocked and he fired home the loose ball from 12 yards.
Arnett then gained the upper hand and a great chance to capture all three points when Powell was shown a red card for an off-the-ball incident with seven minutes to go
However, despite putting their opponents on the back foot, they failed to get the winner.
Mount Pleasant’s assistant coach, Nick Eaden, said they failed to make use of their chances.
“We did enough in the first half. We had enough chances, and with two or three goals, we could have seen the game out.
“At 1-0 it was always going to be tough because every team has a spell in a game, which Arnett did, especially towards the end,” he said.
Mount Pleasant and Arnett are tied for second on 18 points, two behind league leaders Waterhouse. In the day’s second game, Humble Lion secured their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Montego Bay United. Andre Clennon scored the winner in the 32nd minute.
