KINGSTON College’s (KC) Rayon Campbell and Hydel High’s Brianna Lyston hit top form on yesterday’s final day of competition at the three-day Carifta Trials at the National Stadium. Both produced personal best (PB) performances in their respective events, the under-20 400 metres hurdles for boys and the girls’ under-20 200 metres.
Campbell won his event in 49.52 seconds, cutting almost two seconds off his previous best of 51.43. He was fifth in the event at the 2021 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships. Drawn in lane three yesterday, Campbell ran intelligently to draw alongside pre-race favourite Roshawn Clarke of Camperdown High, who ran out of lane five, at the 110-metre mark. The lanky Campbell then pulled away for the big win. Campbell is now the second-fastest Jamaican junior of all time in the event, behind former World Under-20 champion Jaheel Hyde, with 48.81 seconds.
Clarke’s 49.85 for second was also a personal best and number four on the all-time Jamaican junior list. KC’s Antonio Forbes was third in 50.48.
Five years ago, Lyston, then a 12-year-old, produced world age-group record times in both the 100 and 200 metres while representing St Jago High at the Boys and Girls’ Championships. After a drop in form and a change of school two years ago to Hydel High, Lyston showed that she was ready to deliver once again with outstanding results in both sprints at the various JAAA Development meets. Yesterday, the World Under-20 finalist, who was disqualified for a lane infringement at the last meet in Nairobi, Kenya, delivered big time. Drawn in lane four in the under-20 200m final yesterday, she came out of the blocks like a rocket and covered her rivals quickly to pull away from the field to win in an astonishing 22.66, her first time below 23 seconds. She is now the second-fastest Jamaican junior athlete in the event behind Briana Williams, with 22.50.
In yesterday’s final, Lyston’s teammate Alana Reid took second in 23.29, with Carleta Bernard of Mount Alvernia High third in 23.65.
Edwin Allen High’s Bryan Levell also shared some of the spotlight as, following his surprise defeat in the under-20 Boys’ 100 metres on Saturday’s second day, he raced to a personal best 20.53 to win the half-lap event yesterday. St Catherine High’s Sandrey Davison and KC’s Adrian Kerr hit the line together for the minor placings as both were timed in 20.90. The time is a personal best for both runners. Davison got the nod for second.
In middle-distance events, Jamaica College’s J’Voughnn Blake continued his good season after winning the under-20 800 metres in a new personal best of one minute 47.62 seconds. Adrian Nethersole (1:50.15) of St Elizabeth Technical was second, and St Jago’s Tafar-Hi Hinds, third in 1:50.22.
Port Antonio High’s Ainsley Brown captured the under-17 event in 1:57.76 seconds ahead of Jamaica College’s Rasheed Pryce, second in 1:58.91.
In field events among the boys, KC’s World Under-20 triple jump silver medallist and NACAC Under-18 gold medallist Jaydon Hibbert led the way after producing a personal best of 16.56 metres to win the under-20 event.
Among the girls, St Andrew High’s Jo-Anne Pinnock led the way after winning the under-20 girls triple jump with a distance of 12.30 metres as Tamani Murray of Petersfield High took second with 11.98m, just ahead of St Jago’s Kay Lagay Clarke third, with 11.94m.
G.C. Foster College’s Annakaye Lindsay won the girls’ under-20 javelin with 36.03 metres, ahead of Petreece Clarke of Edwin Allen, 35.72m; and St Jago’s Chrishale McCarthy, third with 34.94m. Shenell Cole of Spot Valley High won the under-17 javelin with 31.85m, and Sabrina Atkinson of Hydel captured the under-17 triple jump with 11.83m, ahead of Rhianna Lugg of Excelsior High, second with 11.69m.
