FURTHER AND BEYOND kicked off the derby home turn like a winner on August 7, but his stamina limitations were exposed inside the final half-furlong where CALCULUS and BILLY WHIZZ, who he had seemingly left for dead at the top of the lane, rallied to beat him into third place.

Were it not for FURTHER AND BEYOND’s presence, ROY ROGERS, a strong second to MONEY MONSTER two Wednesdays ago, would have single-handedly taken out the field.
However, allowing FURTHER AND BEYOND two pounds, should Linton Steadman actually make 117lb, still puts ROY ROGERS at the heaviest he will run in his last 10 starts, with a versatile three-year-old charging at him when he would have preferred to be coasting on the lead.
Philip Feanny’s EXCESSIVE FORCE has the potential to blow them all away. However, the United States-bred four-year-old colt continues to be a trainer’s nightmare, slowly into stride and blowing the turn during his races.
Whenever he gets it right, as evidenced in his three victories from 12 starts, EXCESSIVE FORCE is unstoppable but is a habitual offender and can only be taken on trust.
