JONATHAN GRANT High School and Excelsior High School scored important victories as the race in Group B of the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Sports Association (ISSA) Manning Cup football competition intensified yesterday.

Excelsior High slammed Jose Marti High 6-0 at Stadium East, while Jonathan Grant stopped Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High 1-0 at Spanish Town Prison Oval.

The results put Excelsior and Jonathan Grant equal on 11 points, but Excelsior are in second spot with a superior goal difference.

In the group’s other game, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) defeated Dunoon Technical High School 6-0 to stay two points ahead of the pair, with just one round of games remaining.

Tivoli Gardens slipped to fourth on 10 points.

At Stadium East, goals from Jevaughn Smith, Ronaldinho Medwinter, Joel Jones, Lennon Green, Nicholi Fuller and Rojaughn Joseph, saw Excelsior High to a comfortable win over bottom-of-the-table Jose Marti High.

NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET

Despite sitting in the driver’s seat, coach Xavier Gilbert acknowledged that they are not out of the woods yet, as they are down to face group leaders Camperdown High in their final game on Saturday.

“It was a good win and a welcome win. It does boost our morale going into our last game,” said Gilbert. “But we still have to win our last game and we are going to play the group leaders. So it’s going to be a tough challenge.

“Four or five teams have an opportunity to advance and we are mindful of that and we just have to make sure we take care of our business,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kingston Technical High School (KTHS) reclaimed top spot from Jamaica College in Group A, after a 3-0 win over Bridgeport High.

KTHSl lead with 12 points, two more than Jamaica College and three ahead of Charlie Smith, and Calabar High sits fourth with seven points.

In the lone Group C game, Clan Carthy High defeated Papine High 1-0 in the battle of the bottom-placed teams.

The result means Papine High and Jose Marti High are the only schools yet to score a point in the competition.
