THE JAMAICA Cricket Association (JCA) is keeping its fingers crossed that they will get approval from the Government to stage a local T10 league from October 10-27, 2021.
The league, which has garnered some interest from Indian fantasy sports platform, Dream XI, is expected to feature six franchise teams going head to head over 17 days to crown a champion.
Teams will be formulated from clubs representing the counties Cornwall and Middlesex, as well as three teams from Surrey.
The JCA is said to be in talks with the potential sponsors and has already gone ahead and engaged stakeholders. The proposed league is said to have received its backing from Cricket West Indies and the local entity has sent in its application to the Ministry of Health, which will have the final say to make the tournament a reality.
“We can’t play any cricket without government approval, so in the meantime, we are doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work. We have sent in our application to the ministry, but we haven’t gotten a response as yet,” said JCA CEO, Courtney Francis.
NEW PROTOCOL
Once the JCA gets the go-ahead, all matches in the newly formed league are expected to take place at Sabina Park, with no spectators allowed, similar to the two-Test matches that were played at the same venue between the West Indies and Pakistan in August.
Several local players are expected to be on show, including a few national players who are set to fly home from the Minor Leagues in the United States.
Francis is hoping that some form of cricket can finally get a chance to restart after almost a year and a half of no competition.
“It would be great to have cricket playing locally again and what it would also mean is exposure for our players on the international platform. It would be great to expose our local players to the Indian market and potentially the exposure can help their cause in the future,” said Francis.
The local organisers are set to meet with the potential sponsors sometime this week, with the discussion of team names also expected to be finalised by the end of the week.
