CHAMPION TRAINER Anthony Nunes all but wiped out Gary Subratie’s $1.7 million Jamaica Derby gain, responding with a sweep of the first three places in two $900,000-purse events yesterday.
Determined to notch a third-straight trainers’ title this season, Nunes’ watched his $2 million lead disintegrate on Saturday as CALCULUS, who was in his care up to June 3, completed the St Leger-Jamaica Derby double, running out of Subratie’s barn.
However, Nunes’ response, sweeping the lion’s share of stakes in the seventh and ninth races, which he won with 9-5 chance, GO DEH GIRL, and CHANDRA’S LAW, respectively, demonstrated the depth of his barn and all-round strength in numbers.
THE LAST FURLONG
United States-bred GO DEH GIRL, partnered by Dane Nelson, stalked stablemate HOIST THE MAST in the five-furlong straight event before quickening on the faster stand’s side inside the last furlong.
ACERO and GLOCK finished third and fourth, respectively, adding to Nunes’ stakes take.
Drama and an exciting finish marked CHANDRA’S LAW’s 3-1 victory, Omar Walker surviving a jockey’s objection lodged by Abigail Able aboard HEART OF THE SEA, after lasting home by a nose from stablemate BADGYALRIRI.
CHANDRA’S LAW attacked stablemate VANESSA and HEART OF THE SEA approaching the home turn in the five-and-a-half furlong, fillies-only, event for non-winners of two races.
CHANDRA’S LAW shook loose of VANESSA midway the stretch run but started shortening inside the last half-furlong while a lunging BADGYALRIRI surged forward under Dane Nelson.
However, Walker managed to extract a last ounce of effort from the Sensational Slam-She’s Spectacular offspring to deny her stablemate by the flair of a nostril.
Anthony Thomas rode three winners on the 10-race card – KEY WITNESS, JAMAL JAMES and MAYA – in the second, fifth and 10th events, respectively.
Racing continues on Saturday.
