ROJORN DI PILOT outbattled PATRIARCH by three-quarter length to land yesterday’s five-furlong straight Reggae Trophy for trainer Ian Parsard.
Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas shifted course-specialist ROJORN DI PILOT from behind speedy PATRIARCH entering the main track, eyeballing the leader inside the last half-furlong, before inching away close to home for a strong win in 58.1.
Jason DaCosta saddled two winners on the 10-race card – DEEZI and LURE OF LUCY – to maintain his pursuit of two-time defending champion Anthony Nunes from third in the trainers’ stake standings.
DaCosta’s two winners shaved approximately $700,000 off the $5 million deficit he hopes to overhaul after taking over his late father’s barn in March.
Nunes, who logged one winner, VERSATILE VISION in the ninth, had dethroned the late Wayne DaCosta two years ago after the Hall of Famer racked 14 consecutive titles.
SUBRATIE SITS SECOND
Gary Subratie sits second in the standings, $2 million behind Nunes, thanks to CALCULUS winning the Jamaica St Leger and Derby, but lacks the numbers to challenge Nunes and stave off a closing DaCosta.
Meanwhile, leading rider Anthony Thomas and Tevin Foster each won two races to share honours on the card.
Foster opened the programme astride 11-1 upsetter, STRIKINGLYGORGEOUS, before going all the way aboard 6-5 favourite, FAUKLAND, in the sixth.
Thomas produced CORAZON SIN MIEDO with a late burst close home to land the fourth in a driving finish. He closed his two-timer astride LURE OF LUCY, who wore down HOIST THE MAST at five and a half furlongs in the seventh.
Racing continues on Wednesday.
