‘Tegat’s’ inspired substitutions set up win for Arnett | Sports

Arnett Gardens head coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis played a master stroke yesterday, as his two substitutions helped his team to secure a crucial 2-1 win over Dunbeholden at the Drax Hall Sports Complex in St Ann.
The win lifted the ‘Junglists’ to 14 points, one above their opponents on the Jamaica Premier League’s 12-team table.
After withstanding some early dominance from Dunbeholden, Davis went to his bench and replaced Shande James with Luca Kung and Steve Clarke with Damari Deacon.
Those changes would eventually make all the difference for Arnett, as Kung would open the scoring in the 52nd minute, when he pounced on to a parried shot from goalkeeper Damian Hyatt, to rifle home from close range.
That lead was doubled 10 minutes from time, as substitute Deacon latched on to a through pass and rounded the defender and fired low and hard past Hyatt’s near post to virtually seal the win for Arnett Gardens.
A spirited Dunbeholden would eventually get back a goal late in the encounter, as leading scorer Atapharoy Bygrave reacted first to a loose ball after a defensive mix-up inside the Arnett Gardens penalty area in the third minute of added-on time.
The scoreline could have been a lot different had both teams taken their chances earlier in the contest.
Zelano Barnes had his shot inside the area cleared off the line by Arnett Gardens defender Earl Simpson, while Arnett’s Renaldo Cephas had his quickly taken shot well saved by Hyatt with the goal gaping.
With the win, Arnett Gardens leapfrogged Dunbeholden and winning coach Davis said that it was no magic trick that did the job for his team.
“The changes were no magic trick, that’s what coaches supposed to do because that’s my job. We had a poor first half and I had to make the changes to bring some life into the game. I am thankful for the victory but we still need to be more consistent,” Davis said.
A dejected assistant coach of Dunbeholden, Ricardo Smith, summed up a disappointing outing for his team.
“It’s ridiculous how we played today because we were coming off a game where we played fairly well and then to come today and have this type of performance is unacceptable,” Smith said.
In the second game of the double-header at Drax Hall, Cavalier whipped Montego Bay United 3-0. Dwayne Atkinson (59th minute), Kenroy Campbell (78th) and Ronaldo Webster (79th) were the scorers for Cavalier.
